At our library we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of National Library Week in 2008. According to ALA's website it was started in 1958. Just thought you might want to check on this.

Hi, Kathy!
I based my posting on promotional literature I had received that indicated this year was the 50th. I love research, so thanks for giving me this chance to do some.
Investigating the ALA site's history for National Library Week, I found something interesting. It stated that the 1958 National Library Week was sponsored by the "National Book Committee" a nonprofit citizens organization formed by the ALA and the American Book Publishers.
The text goes on to state that "National Library Week was observed again in 1959, and the ALA Council voted to continue the annual celebration." ALA assumed full sponsorship of National Library Week in 1974.
To get accurate information on the date, I emailed the Coordinator of the National Library Week staff. I'll keep you posted on what I hear back on this.
Glad you're reading "Wisconsin Stories" and keeping me honest!
