Overview:

Raynor Library is seeking an associate dean to oversee the Research and Engagement Division and to provide strategic direction, planning, and operational management for a broad range of essential service areas. This new position will focus on developing library faculty and staff and setting strategies to foster engaging user-centered library services and spaces.

The associate dean will oversee the following areas:
  • Access Services (circulation, service desk, interlibrary loan, and stacks maintenance)
  • Research, Teaching and Learning (instruction, research support, outreach)
  • Digital Scholarship Team (a cross-unit strategy and advisory team)
Additionally, the associate dean’s responsibilities will include organizational development, managing compliance with university HR policies, and the library faculty promotion process.

The successful candidate will have the vision and drive to increase student, faculty, and community engagement with the library—from in-person programming to online exhibits—in support of library and university priorities. Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide leadership for the Research and Engagement Division, focusing on developing a unified culture of user-centered service.
  • Supervise the Head of Research, Teaching & Learning and the Access Services Manager, working with them to evaluate services and workflows and maximize the use of technology, staff, and resources. Supervision also includes but is not limited to hiring, terming, disciplinary actions, performance management, development, etc.
  • As a member of the library’s leadership team, contribute to strategy, planning, and operational efficiency in support of campus strategic priorities, especially those that support student success and research.
  • Plan and deliver user-centered services that increase the library’s integration into Marquette’s research and teaching.
  • Guide the cross-departmental Digital Scholarship Team that supports faculty and student needs for web publishing, digital humanities, and data analytics.
  • Coordinate the library’s human resources and employee development—including organizational development, interpretation of policies, and faculty promotion—with support from Marquette’s Human Resources Department and in collaboration with department heads.
  • Responsible for basic financial /budget activities within department.
  • Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Master’s degree in library/information science from an ALA accredited program.
  • A minimum of 8 years of librarian experience.
  • A minimum of five years in academic-library leadership role(s).
  • An approach to leadership that fosters mutual respect, collegiality, and collaboration; embraces creative thinking; and is comfortable taking appropriate risks.
  • Experience supporting the research and learning needs of students and faculty.
  • Familiarity with approaches to digital scholarship, such as digital humanities, web publishing, and data analytics.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish strategic campus partnerships.
  • Demonstrated engagement in activities that advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in the library, campus, or community.
  • Familiarity with the implementation of HR policies and procedures.
  • Evidence of professional service and a record of scholarly contribution through presentations and/or publications.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Experience with change management and implementation of HR policies and procedures.
  • Experience supporting digital scholarship in an academic library.
  • Experience using assessment strategies to improve library services or instruction.
