Raynor Library sits at the intellectual and geographic heart of Marquette University, serving as a vibrant center of scholarship and community for the campus. Following the appointment of a new library dean in 2022 and adoption new foundational vision, mission, and values, the library has embarked on an exciting transformation, with strategic planning and several key initiatives under way to strengthen its impact on learning and research. Notably, in 2024, the library will become the gateway to Marquette’s new Lemonis Center for Student Success, an innovative hub for academic support services for students.

As part of this transformation, Raynor Library is seeking a head of Access Services to provide innovative leadership for core library services, including a service desk, circulation, interlibrary loan, and stacks maintenance. This person will collaborate across library departments to ensure the library supports the needs of library users in a continuously evolving campus environment.

Responsibilities:

Leadership
  • Provide leadership and strategic direction for the Access Services department and serve as a member of the library’s leadership council.
  • Foster a welcoming and inclusive library environment through user-centered and equitable patron service practices and consistent staff development.

Planning, goal setting, and assessment
  • Undertakes planning and sets goals and priorities for the department in alignment with library and university strategic plans.
  • Routinely implements, assesses, and enhances departmental policies and procedures to meet evolving operational needs and to ensure an equitable workplace.
  • Uses evidence-based planning and decision-making related to staffing, services, and spaces.

Collaboration and engagement
  • Works closely with colleagues across departments to develop a holistic, user-centered approach to providing services and managing student employees.
  • Communicates across the library about available resources, programs and/or services.

Workplace wellness
  • Hires, supervises, and supports the Access Services team, providing professional development, guidance, and coaching as needed.
  • Creates a positive team environment for the department that fosters collegiality and innovation and empowers staff.

Professional development
  • Maintains awareness of current best practices and emerging trends in academic librarianship and applies that knowledge to library needs.
  • Engages in and represents the library in national, regional, and campus professional service activities.


Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in library/information science from an ALA accredited program.
  • Minimum 5 years of library experience.
  • Supervisory or leadership experience in a library or other setting.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging trends in library access, resource sharing, delivery services, and user services.
  • Evidence of strong commitment to patron service and engagement.
  • Experience providing library reference or a similar type of customer services.
  • Experience with assessing services and using evidence to improve operations and patron services.
  • Knowledge of integrated library systems and library discovery systems.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
  • Record of professional involvement at the regional and national levels.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, analytical, and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience implementing or using Ex Libris products (Alma, Primo)
