Continuing Education Services at the iSchool at UW-Madison is seeking an instructor for Public & Community Library Services, a 12-week asynchronous online continuing education course. This is a required course for Wisconsin grades 2 and 3 library director certification (although library personnel in other positions and in other states also may take this course). The content is set forth by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.

This instructor will begin teaching in the fall of 2024 – the course dates are somewhat flexible pending the instructor’s availability but typically run from September through December. This course is typically offered once per year in the fall. The iSchool will provide training and technical support for the instructor. Familiarity with online teaching or learning is an asset, but not required. The iSchool uses Canvas as our learning management system. All course design and instruction work is completed remotely.

Ideal candidates:
  • At minimum, must hold a Bachelor’s degree
  • Able to work on course development during the summer of 2024 and teach starting in September 2024 (dates will be set upon hire)
  • Well-versed in the required content topics covered in the course (outlined below)
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Experience with instruction is preferred
  • Current or extensive experience in Wisconsin libraries is preferred

  • Outreach to the community and community building
  • Customer service
  • Programming
  • Readers’ advisory
  • Reference interview
  • Searching and research strategies
  • Evaluating resources
  • Legal/ethical issues in reference
  • Training for staff and patrons to use resources
  • Technology and physical space in service
  • Networking with other institutions and professional allies

Salary: The instructor will receive a minimum of $2,447.50 (before taxes) each time they teach the course. The instructor will receive an additional one-time $1,320 (before taxes) development payment the first time the course is offered.
