The Kenosha Public Library is seeking a dynamic, creative, community-oriented Early Literacy Librarian. Under the general direction of the Head of Youth and Family Services in conjunction with the Outreach Coordinator, this team member will provide quality early literacy programming, reader's advisory, and reference services to children and families, as well as educators and others who work with youth. The ideal candidate will have at least 2 years experience as a professional librarian, experience in a public library setting working with children and early literacy, and Spanish language fluency. This position will be posted until filled.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential Job Functions

Maintain contacts in area schools, including after-school programs and daycares

Communicate with area daycare and school staff about library services and programs

Develop and implement a menu of outreach offerings, library tour programs for youth and educator/caregiver audiences, sample programs that can be presented from the menu, and custom programs for groups or organizations as requested

Work in conjunction with Youth Programming Librarian to incorporate successful programming into outreach offerings

Coordinate/schedule class and youth group visits to the library and outreach programs; maintain outreach and school visit spreadsheet for statistical purposes

Develop and implement professional development programs for early childhood educators, school staff, and caregivers

Represent the Library at community events, resource fairs, and open houses

Represent the library on community committees

Foster a collaborative relationship with community groups, organizations, educational institutions, agencies and businesses in the city and Kenosha County, by providing information about the Library and its services

Participate in conducting summer library programs

Develop programs for youth in the Simmons and Uptown neighborhoods and at those libraries

Explore grant opportunities relating to young children and families

Drive outreach vehicles

Assist with Bookmobile display & merchandising of youth materials

Fill assignment alert requests for the Bookmobile and other
locations as needed.

Work in conjunction with Circulation Services regarding library card
registration for classes and outreach events

Issue library cards and complete other circulation functions as needed

Work regular shifts at the youth service desks

Serve as Person in Charge when required

Maintain knowledge of current trends and participate in appropriate conferences, workshops, and seminars to develop professional and leadership skills.

Be knowledgeable of KPL planning and policy developments.

Other tasks and projects as assigned.


REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

Master's degree in Library and Information Science

2 years professional library experience (public library experience preferred)

Ability to communicate effectively with library staff and the public

Ability to gather statistics, analyze information and write reports

Good interpersonal skills and ability to maintain cooperative and courteous working relationships with the public, peers, and supervisors.

Ability to creatively and effectively make independent decisions without supervision

Mathematical ability: calculate basic arithmetic problems (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) without the aid of a calculator

Reading ability: effectively read and understand information. Working knowledge of English grammar and spelling

Time management: set priorities in order to meet assignment deadlines

Possession of a valid driver's license and a good driving record

A personal vehicle for use on the job

Spanish language skills preferred


Physical and Working Conditions:

Far vision at 20 feet or further; near vision at 20 inches or less

Keyboarding, writing, sorting, shelving books

Lifting and carrying 30 pounds or less

Ability to travel to meetings and programs outside the library, including overnight travel

Pushing and pulling: objects weighing 60-100 pounds on wheels

Sitting, standing, walking, climbing, stooping, bending, twisting and reaching.

Talking and hearing

Ability to use the following: audiovisual equipment, building security systems, calculator, computer, tablet, copy machine, fax machine, telephone

Appointment to the position will be in accordance with Kenosha Public Library policy. The Kenosha Public Library reserves the right to further evaluate only those applicants who best meet the needs of the Kenosha Public Library. New employees start at the beginning of the pay range.
